Our Centre organises the translation of modern literature in mathematics into Ukrainian. We give preference to books that will spark interest in mathematical science among students, teachers, and motivated high schoolers. ICMU provides grants to translators and oversees the editing and publication process of the books.

Current projects are listed below together with links to the application forms for participation.

From Circles to Cubics: A Tour of Elementary Algebraic Geometry, by Borys Kadets and Daniel Keliher

Year of publication: 2025

Original language: English

Number of pages: 231

ICMU is carrying out the translation into Ukrainian with the authors’ consent and using the materials they have provided. The book is intended for a wide audience, including motivated high schoolers and teachers. It contains many illustrations. We invite Ukrainian students and PhD candidates to become translators of this book!

If you would like to become a translator of this book, please submit an application by 15 October by filling in this form. You will need to upload your curriculum vitae and a translation of the relevant part of the book, prepared in LaTeX format.

"Who should read this book? The reader we have in mind is mathematically curious, but is not required to have a background in abstract algebra, topology, or analysis. An undergraduate student familiar with complex numbers and some linear algebra has all the prerequisites necessary to read the book. We have included short review of the basic facts not covered in high-school mathematics. An ambitious high-school student who is interested in geometry and willing to accept a small number of facts from undergraduate curriculum on faith is sufficiently prepared to proceed." – Borys Kadets and Daniel Keliher, from the Preface to "From Circles to Cubics: A Tour of Elementary Algebraic Geometry"

Invitation to Discrete Mathematics, by Jirří Matoušek and Jaroslav Nešetřil

© Oxford University Press

Year of publication: 2008 (second edition)

Language: English

Number of pages: 462

ICMU is organising the translation into Ukrainian under an agreement with Oxford University Press. The book contains numerous exercises and illustrations. It is a modern textbook on discrete mathematics that will be useful for students, lecturers, teachers of mathematics and computer science in upper secondary schools, and, more broadly, for anyone interested.

If you would like to become a translator of this book, please submit an application by 7 November by filling in this form. You will need to upload your curriculum vitae and a translation of the relevant part of the book, prepared in LaTeX format.

"The book is written for a reader who, every now and then, enjoys mathematics, and our boldest hope is that our text might help some readers to develop some positive feelings towards mathematics that might have remained latent so far. In our opinion, this is a key prerequisite: an aesthetic pleasure from an elegant mathematical idea, sometimes mixed with a triumphant feeling when the idea was difficult to understand or to discover. Not all people seem to have this gift, just as not everyone can enjoy music, but without it, we imagine, studying mathematics could be a most boring thing." – Jirří Matoušek and Jaroslav Nešetřil, from the Preface to "Invitation to Discrete Mathematics"
